My third source: Essay 3

The article that I chose to use is Addiction to Modern Technology: What Science Says. This article was published on August 2, 2017, so the information is recent. It was published on Elsevier, a science website that is designed to “help you progress science, advance healthcare and improve performance,” so the intent of this article is to put out correct and up to date science information. The authors, Michael Osuch and Steven Turner, both have degrees the sciences from accredited universities, and have published scientific journals in their past. Because of all of this, I am very confident that the information presented is honorable and up to date.

The article talks about the addiction to modern technology. It calls the addiction the “Tech Zombie Epidemic” and describes how serious the addiction is, and why it is so serious. In my essay, I want to discuss the way that we abuse technology, and to propose proper ways in which we should be using technology. I will specifically be talking about the parts of technology that have a negative impact on our lives; the parts that we are becoming addicted to. This article goes hand in hand with what I want to write about. Here is a quote from the article that articulates its purpose: “The articles look at this emerging topic from a range of angles, such as the causes of internet addiction in young adults and the link between excessive social media use, narcissism and self-esteem”. The article, as it says in this quote, describes the internet addiction, what causes it, and why it’s a problem.

I plan on using Bill Wasik’s “My Crowd Experiment: The Mob Project” to describe how the internet is dangerous, and people will do anything to gain notoriety on the internet. This will relate to my thesis about how we abuse technology because there is no purpose to the mob project. The people involved were all controlled by the internet, and did what they were told through email, without any purpose of wasting their time and doing the MOB project. My argument is that there are effective, productive ways to use the internet, but the majority of our internet use is unproductive, and we should stop using it in such ways. I plan on using Sam Anderson’s “In Defense of Distraction” to describe both the negative impacts that technology has on our ability to focus, or the why behind my argument, and also to discuss some positive aspects of technology, my counter argument. These will both relate to the third article I have chosen, and will come together to formulate my paper. The article I chose will be involved throughout my paper: to set the basis for my argument, discussing the addiction itself; to help explain the negative impacts it has on our society, the why; and to discuss the ways that technology is actually being abused. This will help me formulate my conclusion, and propose my new idea of how we should be properly using technology, and what aspects of our lives technology should be cut out of.
