Prompt 2: Attention Vs. Shifting Focus

Prompt 2: Attention Vs. Shifting Focus

I am going to argue that rather than either attention or distraction is beneficial, a combination of both is what is best. I will discuss how too much distraction from technology can diminish social interaction, intelligence, and quality of life. I will also discuss how too much distraction can get in the way of having any motivation or drive to do anything. Lastly, I will discuss the reality of moving our society away from technology, and the benefits that technology does have. In my conclusion I will discuss how I believe technology is a valuable tool if used wisely, but if mistreated, like any tool, is destructive. I will use “What is it about 20-Somethings” to describe the changing society that we are facing; “Attention Deficit…” to describe the negative impacts that technology has on our social interactions, intelligence, and quality of life; and “In Defense of Distraction” to discuss the negative impacts on our intelligence, quality of life, and motivation/drive, as well as the benefits that technology has. I will pull all of this together to conclude that we have circumstances under which we should and should not use technology.

  1. I think that this is a good approach to the prompt; how the combination of attention and distraction is what it ultimately beneficial. I think you’ll be able to make a good argument with this because there is a lot of evidence for both sides so by combining them you’ll have plenty to work with.

  2. I really like your idea for the paper, I am also going to focus on how a balance of both will be more beneficial than one or the other. I also like your proposed connection to Henig’s essay, its a solid comparison to be made.
